In the upper 3 SAR frames, open water is clearly seen in the top of the image. Also in the central part are almost homogeneous areas interpreted as open water. Around the open water areas are some very dark parts, which is seen to be new ice. This can be confirmed by comparing the SSM/I images from February 19 and February 17. In the right hand side and in the lower part of the image, is a grey background with some dark features seen. The grey background is expected to be pancake ice with some water content. The dark features are probably new developed ice.
