The SAR image shows open water in the upper right corner. New ice is seen to be formed along the ice edge. In the rest of the image, a grey background with some dark features is seen. The grey background is pancake ice and water, while the dark features are new ice. The formation of new ice can also be seen in the SSM/I images, where there is a development from February 16 to February 18.
