In the upper 3 SAR frames, open water is clearly present in the upper left hand side. Also in the lower left corner is open water seen. This is in good agreement with the SSM/I image. Along the ice edge long bands of very dark new ice are formed. In the central part and right hand side of the image the ice concentration is quite high. There is a dark background of almost consolidated pancake ice, and only with a few brighter areas with a significant water content. There are also some very dark features of new ice.
