The SAR image shows open water in the upper and right parts of the image. The rest is ice covered. The ice is expected to consist of a dense concentration of pancake ice, with only a few open water areas in between. Some brighter features are seen in the central image, and they are areas with less ice concentration. At the south side of these areas, new ice is developed. Also along the northern ice edge are new ice seen to be formed.
