The SSM/I image shows that open water is present in the upper left of the image. In the SAR image, open water is only recognized in the very upper part. Beneath the open water is a very dark area, which is probably new ice. The wind at Jan Mayen on February 14 is 9m/s, which would give open water a brighter appearance compared to the very dark area. Also in the rest of the image are some very dark features, which are also new ice. Outside the very dark parts are mixtures of pancake ice and open water seen to exist.
