In the SAR image, some very dark areas are seen in the upper left corner. By comparing the SSM/I images on February 1 and January 31, new ice is seen to be formed in this area (the upper left corner in the SAR image is the left most corner in the SSM/I image). To the right of this new ice, a dark gray homogeneous area is seen, and again by comparison with the SSM/I image, this is recognized as open water. Below and in between the new ice, are some brighter areas with patterns seen. This is probably a mixture of pancake ice and open water. These patterns are formed in circular shapes, which probably is related to ocean currents.
