The large variations in ice cover (in particular the rapid growth of ice in certain periods) might be associated with advection of ice into the area. In order to study this in more detail, individual ice floes were tracked from NOAA-AVHRR near and thermal infrared images and from ERS-1 and ERS-2 SAR images.
