Synthetic aperture radar (SAR)

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on board the ERS-1 satellite has a 5.3 GHz radar frequency and a spatial resolution of approximately 30 m. The angle of incidence ranges between and . The satellite has been operating since July 1991. In the following the appearance of open water, grease ice, new ice and pancake ice in SAR images will be explained.
