February 7 1993 (1)

In the lower single SAR frame from February 7, the image is divided in a bright and a dark area. The upper part is bright, and it consists basicly of open water. This can also be seen in the SSM/I image. In the upper right corner a dark structure is seen, which is probably new ice. Also a few grey circular patterns are seen in the open water, and this is perhaps grease ice or pancake ice. The lower part of the image appears dark. The sharp division between the bright and dark parts are perhaps created by an oceanic front. The grey circular patterns from the bright part are seen to extend down in the dark part. These patterns are probably formed by convection created ocean currents. The dark background in the lower part of the image is perhaps open water with different dielectric properties compared to the upper part. Also some new ice can exist in this area.
