The SAR image shows, that open water is present in the upper left corner and in the lower right corner. In all of the central image, a grey background with some dark features are present. The grey background can be formed by a mixture of pancake ice and open water. The dark features are probably new ice or grease ice formed in calm conditions. On January 27 the wind speed at Jan Mayen [NMI, 1993] is 5m/s, and at a weak wind like this, new smooth ice can be formed.
