In the SAR image, the upper bright part is easyly recognized as open water. Also in the lower right corner, open water is present. In the central part, a dark background with some bright spots is seen. The dark background is probably a high concentration of pancake ice, while the bright spots are open water between the ice. A few very dark features are seen in the left hand side, which are recognized as being new ice. By comparison with the SSM/I image, good agreement is found.
