Conclusion

In this report the ice conditions in the Odden area have been discussed, primarily on the basis of ERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Meteorological data and passive microwave radiometer measurements from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) satellites have been used for comparizon.
It has been shown, that the ice conditions in the Odden area in a period of January and February 1993 is very complex. The principal ice types are new ice, formed as either nilas or grease ice, and pancake ice in various concentrations.
Convection created ocean currents have been observed, and they appear most clearly in the case of a pancake ice and water mixture.
