The top 3 frames in the SAR image has open water in the upper part of the image. At the ice edge bands of new ice are formed. Below the ice edge is a small area with a high ice concentration of pancake ice. This area is basicly dark. Further down the image, the left hand side has a bright background, which is open water. The foreground is dark features of pancake ice. In the right hand side, the background is dark, and it consists of pancake ice and open water. The foreground in the right hand side is bright features with open water. On the east side of these open water areas, new ice is seen to be formed.
