Most of the SAR image is covered with bright areas, and only thin dark bands are present between the bright parts. The bright parts are wind blown open water, while the dark bands are collections of pancake ice. This can also be confirmed in the SSM/I image, where all parts are covered with a low ice concentration. The pancake ice bands appear homogeneous in the SAR image, which indicates, that they are caused by a big number of small ice floes; smaller than the spatial resolution.
